A print-ready picture book PDF can become a real book in an evening. The short version: print single-sided at actual size on heavy matte paper, trim to the page edge, and bind with rings or a copy shop coil. A square 8.5 by 8.5 inch page fits on standard US Letter paper with room to trim.
Here is each step, with the settings that cause most failed prints.
What you need
- Paper: a heavy matte paper for the inside pages (around 32 lb bond or 120 gsm and up) and cardstock for the cover (65 to 110 lb). Thin office paper lets the next picture show through.
- A color printer. Inkjet gives richer illustrations on matte paper; a laser printer is fine for a sturdier everyday copy.
- A paper trimmer or a metal ruler and craft knife. Scissors leave wavy edges.
- Binding: two or three loose-leaf rings and a hole punch, or a trip to a copy shop.
Printer settings that matter
- Actual size, not "fit to page". Scaling shrinks the square page and changes its proportions after trimming.
- Single-sided. Double-sided printing at home rarely lines up, and heavy paper often jams in the duplex unit. Glue or bind pages back to back afterwards if you want a two-sided book.
- Best quality and the right paper type. Telling the printer it is using matte or photo paper changes how much ink it lays down.
- Print one test page first. Check the colors and that nothing is cut off before printing all pages.
Trim
An 8.5 by 8.5 inch page printed on 8.5 by 11 inch Letter paper leaves a 2.5 inch strip to cut off. Line up the trimmer with the edge of the artwork, not the edge of the sheet, and cut several pages at once only if your trimmer handles the thickness cleanly.
Three ways to bind
| Method | Effort | Result |
|---|---|---|
| Hole punch and loose-leaf rings | 10 minutes at home | Opens flat, pages easy to replace, very toddler-proof |
| Coil or comb binding at a copy shop | A short trip | Looks like a real book, opens flat; ask for a clear plastic front cover |
| Photo book service | Upload and wait for delivery | A true hardcover or softcover, but plan for shipping time in December |
For a book that will be handled by a two-year-old, lamination at the copy shop before binding makes the pages close to indestructible.
Frequently asked questions
How long does it take?
Printing and binding a 12-page book with rings takes under half an hour once the paper is in the house. A copy shop usually binds while you wait or the same day.
Can I read it on a tablet instead?
Yes. A PDF opens on any tablet or phone, which is handy for travel. Many families keep the digital copy for trips and the printed one for bedtime.
What does a personalized PDF book cost?
Ours starts at $16.99 for a 12-page illustrated book delivered as a print-ready PDF; see pricing. Printing at home adds only the cost of paper and ink.
Is it good enough as a gift?
Printed on heavy paper and coil bound, it looks like a handmade book, which for many families is the point. Ideas for giving it are in Christmas Eve box ideas and books about becoming a big brother or sister, and what to look for in a personalized book covers quality.
