What happens in this book

Your child finds a gate at the bottom of the garden that was never there before. Behind it is a warm, green valley where the dinosaurs are enormous, slow and entirely friendly. One of them has lost something and cannot reach it, and your child is the only one small enough to help. The story ends back at the gate, with the valley waving goodbye and a promise that it will still be there tomorrow.

Questions parents ask about this theme

Are the dinosaurs scary?

No. Every dinosaur in the valley is drawn round, warm and slow, with soft eyes and no teeth on display. There is no chase, no predator and no peril. The tension in the story comes from a problem that needs solving, not from danger.

Can I choose which dinosaur is in the book?

The quiz asks for your child's favorite animal and it appears in the story, so if they answer triceratops, that is the dinosaur they meet. If they answer cat, the cat comes along to the valley too, which children find very funny.

Is it too young for a 7-year-old?

Seven is the top of the range and it lands well if the child still enjoys picture books. The text is written at a read-aloud level, so a seven-year-old can read it alone. If your child has moved on to chapter books, the Little Superhero theme usually suits better.
